Impactfully assess projects that support social enterprises to generate income
How to assess charitable projects that generate income from trading.
This assessment guide and report supports assessors to evaluate charitable projects that generate income from trading, increasing financial sustainability.

This type of project requires a different approach to assessment because as well as evaluating the project's social impact, we also need to consider how likely it is to boost their financial resilience in the longer term.

This requires a different assessment process than what is traditionally followed. This guide explains the main differences, the context behind this growing trend in grantmaking and how to impactfully assess this type of project.

How does the guidance help?
It's no secret that many charities and social enterprises are finding it hard to fundraise. Competition for grants is fierce, and as an assessor, I see first hand how projects get turned away even when they meet criteria, as there is not enough funding to go round.

However, it was when I was assessing for a programme that supported social enterprises to trade and generate income that I saw there was a gap in assessment guidance for this area. I wanted to use my experience to produce a framework that could support assessors with it.

As a result, I have developed this comprehensive assessment guide to show how to evaluate charitable projects that generate income.

As well as providing a clear route to evaluating these projects, it also gives confidence that the right checks are in place, making the assessment process easier and simpler.

There is also a handy 2 page pdf that summarises the main differences between this type of grant and the more traditional approach.
